Harbour Arterial Project - Stage 2

By upgrading the Harbour Arterial route, we are putting in place measures to provide a route through Dunedin that avoids disruption caused by the construction of the new Dunedin Hospital, and provides an improved alternative route for freight/traffic bypassing the central city.

We have almost completed Stage 1 (Wharf and surrounding streets) and are now starting Stage 2 (Thomas Burns Street) and Stage 3 (Strathallan Street).

There are several measures that must be made to ensure the route is as efficient as possible but there is some flexibility.

Here are the key measures:

  • Construct a median wire safety barrier on Thomas Burns Street to prevent vehicles turning right and prevent opposing traffic coming too close together
  • Vehicles turning out of Cresswell and Bombay Streets will only be able to turn left
  • No exits from Willis and Fryatt Streets
  • Construct two roundabouts at the intersections of Tewsley/Willis Streets and Tewsley/Cresswell Street
  • Remove on-road carparks on Thomas Burns Street and add angle carparks on Tewsley Street

 What can change?

  •  Fryatt Street could be two-way but vehicles would only be able to exit left onto Wharf Street. The present option to enter the over-bridge ramp would not be possible.
  • While on-road carparks must be removed on Thomas Burns Street, new restricted carparks can be added on some surrounding streets to suit business and customer needs.
  • Willis Street could be closed for both entry and exit.
