Harbour Arterial Project - Stage 3

By upgrading the Harbour Arterial route, we are putting in place measures to provide a route through Dunedin that avoids disruption caused by the construction of the new Dunedin Hospital, and provides an improved alternative route for freight/traffic bypassing the central city.

We have almost completed Stage 1 (Wharf and surrounding streets) and are now starting Stage 2 (Thomas Burns Street) and Stage 3 (Strathallan Street).

There are several measures that must be made to ensure the route is as efficient as possible but there is some flexibility.

Here are the key measures:

  • Remove all on-road carparks on Strathallan Street.
  • At the eastern end of Strathallan Street vehicles will be required to turn left onto Wharf Street. Turning right onto Portsmouth Drive will be prohibited.
  • Construct a new roundabout at the Otaki/Orari Street intersection.
